Konstantine Vlasis

Konstantine Vlasis is a composer and scholar of ecological sound. His work explores how sound and listening mediate environmental relationships, and the extent to which music can inform climate mitigation. As a member of Apex Percussion, Konstantine aims to blend soundscape recording, audio-based research, music composition, and percussive arts together as a creative practice and means for climate communication.

Konstantine graduated from Tennessee Technological University in 2014 with a degree in Percussion Performance. In 2017, he completed a graduate degree in Musicology from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville.

Konstantine is currently a PhD Candidate in Music and Sound Studies at NYU. His dissertation examines the rapid melt of glaciers in Iceland through the overlapping domains of composed music and ambient sound. This project builds upon ethnographic research that Konstantine has conducted in Iceland over the past decade, which focuses on how sound and music reflect environmental sentiments, influence perceptions about nature, and facilitate temporalities of rapid change and transformation.

Konstantine has presented and curated his work across the United States as well as internationally, and has received numerous awards for his artistic, production, and academic achievements. Most recently, Konstantine was named a 2024 Leifur Eiríksson Foundation Fellow, 2024 NYU GSAS Torch Fellow, and recipient of a Humanities New York Public Humanities Grant.
